Subtitled “tales of agriculture,” you can place this one in the “really strange idea for a series” pile. I don’t want to spoil it for anyone but it’s hard to talk about this series without first explaining that it’s about a first year college student, Tadayasu Sawaki, who can see microbes. Yes, microbes. You know, like fungus and yeast and stuff? Now that may sound disgusting, until you translate that into what microbes look like in the anime world which is: absolutely adorable! In fact, getting to see the different microbes animated is part of the appeal of watching the series, not to mention seeing what Tadayasu uses his special talents for. The microbes themselves have a very simple but fun design to them that matches very loosely their real life physical characteristics, not unlike the plushy microbes actually (still setting aside the funds to buy the “mono” and “black death” plushies). Watching the series is somewhat educational as you get to see what the microbes do and learn a little about how they interact with each other. I think this just may be the ticket we need to get kids interested in science class. Finding a school board to agree with me, especially considering all the weirdness that goes on in the series (brewing sake, cross dressing, wearing bdsm gear into the science lab) may be difficult…
