Just in case the title doesn’t say it all, let me clarify: this anime really is about an angel who can club people to death. That said, it is more cute than gory, and more amusing than you’d probably imagine unless your brain’s on the darker side of things, in which case you’d imagine it’d be fucking hilarious (which it is). Honestly, I’m pretty shocked that more lovers of weird anime haven’t been talking about this one. It’s been around for a while now and I still find that even the most devoted anime junkies haven’t heard of it. It’s a short series with only 8 13 min. episodes (technically) in 4 installments. The series itself is plenty unpredictable, starring Dokuro the original club to death angel (with a bitchin’ character design) as well as other angels (with equally strange roles) popping up just as you start to get bored. The main character, Sakura Kusakabe, a second year High School Student, is caught in the middle of the angelic chaos, not to mention all the other things a normal school-aged kid has to deal with. Some of the scenes are a little on the steamy side, so I don’t recommend this one for the kiddies. However, I can’t stop any of you filthy teenagers out there from watching it. That’s your parents’ job. Oh, and also best theme song ever: pipiru piru piru pipiru pi!

Subtitled “tales of agriculture,” you can place this one in the “really strange idea for a series” pile. I don’t want to spoil it for anyone but it’s hard to talk about this series without first explaining that it’s about a first year college student, Tadayasu Sawaki, who can see microbes. Yes, microbes. You know, like fungus and yeast and stuff? Now that may sound disgusting, until you translate that into what microbes look like in the anime world which is: absolutely adorable! In fact, getting to see the different microbes animated is part of the appeal of watching the series, not to mention seeing what Tadayasu uses his special talents for. The microbes themselves have a very simple but fun design to them that matches very loosely their real life physical characteristics, not unlike the plushy microbes actually (still setting aside the funds to buy the “mono” and “black death” plushies). Watching the series is somewhat educational as you get to see what the microbes do and learn a little about how they interact with each other. I think this just may be the ticket we need to get kids interested in science class. Finding a school board to agree with me, especially considering all the weirdness that goes on in the series (brewing sake, cross dressing, wearing bdsm gear into the science lab) may be difficult…

Azumanga Daioh is one of the better school girl animes out there. It’s quirky, strange, and adorable in a way that even dudes can appreciate. And did I mention that it’s funny? It is. In a bizarre, off-beat kinda way. I mean the theme song has the sentence “The temptation of wheat” in it. What more do you need? I won’t tell you about the stranger bits because you’ll see those for yourself soon enough into the series and I don’t want to ruin the surprise. I’ll just say watch a couple episodes of it and if you’re not hooked then it’s probably safe to let it fall by the wayside and move on to something else. More likely then not, you’ll enjoy it. Also Chiyo Mihama wins for the most adorable “child prodigy” character ever created. Those pigtails!

FLCL is probably one of the weirdest, most revolutionary anime series to come out in the past 10 years. It is also without a doubt one of the best. The series is so damn strange and the artwork so damn good that it is really a shame that it’s so damn short (only 6 episodes). Trying to describe the plot is a bit like trying to stick your hand in a blender and avoid losing your fingers so perhaps it’s best I just say the plot is unconventional and involves a twelve year old boy named Naota and an alien named Haruko who live in a fictional suburb in Japan. It also involves the following: a robot, a blue vintage Rickenbacker 4001 left-handed electric bass guitar, a Vespa, and the oddest eyebrows you’ve ever seen. The anime also is odd in terms of its style. There are a couple times in the series where they randomly decide to switch style, no doubt through some great effort on part of the studio. If you prefer traditional anime with predictable story lines this will not be your cup o’ tea. If, on the other hand, you’ve liked any of the weirder “abstract” series that have emerged in the past (Lain, Paranoia Agent, etc.) or just happen to appreciate good art, I’d recommend giving this one a go. It’s one I can watch over and over again and every time find something new to appreciate.

This series is about a group of school girls who in 1925 Japan want to start a baseball team. A thin plot, if you can call it a plot, but really okay to watch as the characters are ADORABLE and the artwork is very soft, pretty and girly. The thinness of the plot is helped by the motivation of the girls, who want to “one up” the boys by proving that a women’s place isn’t just in the kitchen. I say more power to ‘em. Also, the girls don’t know how to play and struggle to find others to join the team. The bond between the characters is very believable, even moving. The second episode almost had me in tears. No really, I’m just that big of a sap. To those who complain about the main character’s permanent blush marks, I say this to you: you are just jealous and need to get over it. Seriously. Also, if you are not a girly girl or a very girly boy OR if you do not like wasting your time on horribly, mind-numbingly cute things then you will be bored to tears by this one. Please return to finishing your action-packed episodes of Bleach. Thank you.
